Video SEO — Are You Missing This Big Opportunity?

It is reportedly about 50 times easier to get a page one ranking for a video than it is for a regular web page (That is according to a 2011 Forrester report). Furthermore, experience in the trenches proves this to be true. So how do you improve your video SEO and increase traffic to your web properties? Here are tips gleaned from an article at econsultancy.com…

1. Understand that Google doesn’t see your video. It relies on metadata to determine what your video is all about. Therefore, make sure you get those elements right — Title, description, file name, etc.

2. If you have a number of self-hosted videos, make sure you have a video site map.

3. Pay attention to Youtube — It is the second largest search engine. And to rank highly on it, pay attention to your video’s metadata. Do all you can (within reason and their terms) to increase views, subscribers, ratings, incoming links (embeds, rss links, regular links) comments and shares.

Youtube gets far more traffic than Bing. And since you wouldn’t consider yours a well-rounded SEO campaign without paying attention to it, don’t forget Youtube. You’ll be leaving a lot of money on the table.
